Biden Executive Order to Advance Policies on Prescription Drug Prices, Imports from Canada

The Biden administration has advanced via executive order several new policies targeting high prescription drug prices and encouraging drug imports from Canada.

As part of the executive order, President Joe Biden will order the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to create a comprehensive plan for combating high drug prices and price gouging by late August. The executive order also mentions advancing a Trump administration policy on importing prescription drugs from Canada and calls for a ban on arrangements between brand-name and generic drug makers that delay competition.

On July 7, the White House budget office began reviewing a Trump administration proposal to tie Medicare payments for certain drugs to international prices, but it is still unclear whether the current administration will move forward with, modify, or rescind that plan.
