In what appears to be a move toward selling prescription drugs outside of the U.S., Amazon has filed to trademark “Amazon Pharmacy” in the U.K., Australia, and Canada.
The Canadian patent, filed by Amazon on January 9, 2020, also lists other spaces that Amazon Pharmacy could move into, including surgical, medical, and dental instruments. The trademark filings found on the Australia and U.K. intellectual property office websites are similar, and suggest Amazon intends to expand its prescription drug business internationally.
In 2018, Amazon moved into the U.S. prescription drug industry when it acquired PillPack, a home medication delivery startup. Since then, Amazon has faced some challenges entering the U.S. prescription drug market, including lawsuits from competitors and opposition from pharmacy benefits managers.
