President Trump Names Eric Hargan as Acting HHS Secretary

President Trump named Eric Hargan acting secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Mr. Hargan is replacing interim secretary Don Wright, MD, who had filled the vacancy after previous secretary Tom Price, MD, resigned amid investigations into his use of private charter and military jets at taxpayers’ expense.

Mr. Hargan, previously a lawyer in Chicago, was confirmed in a Senate vote of 57-38. He assisted in the HHS transition team for President Trump and served in HHS from 2003 to 2007 under President George W. Bush. During his time at the HHS, he served in several roles, including deputy general counsel, principal associate deputy secretary, and acting deputy secretary.

Prior to joining HHS, Hargan taught administrative law and health-care regulation at Loyola Law School in Chicago. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University, then his law degree from Columbia University.
